Research Interests

Dr. Rajendran has a broad background in pharmacology with over 20 years of experience and a proven track record in cancer chemoprevention, preclinical research, drug discovery & development.  His main research focuses on characterizing the molecular pathways implicated in the development of gastrointestinal cancers.  He laid the groundwork for the idea that dietary isothiocyanates derived from cruciferous vegetables have the potential to modify protein acetylation.  His lab routinely employs both cell-based and rodent animal models to study how dietary compounds modulate cancer epigenetics mechanisms that confer chemo-protection and chemo-sensitivity.  He established strong ties with collaborators and clinical providers that made it possible to conduct clinical trials with dietary isothiocyanates, such as sulforaphane.  His long-term goal is to better understand the mechanisms involved in cancer progression in order to help design effective strategies for the prevention and/or treatment of cancer.
